Black And White Group
Tuesday 10th December 2013
To all interested in being a part of the newly formed Black & White Group, tonight we will be holding our inaugural meeting which will take place as part of the regular monthly Print Group meeting in the small hall at Tangmere Village Hall, 7:30pm to 9:30pm. Cost will be £2 on the night for CCC members and as a special introductory offer, £2 for non-members also. (At future meetings it will be £4 for non CCC members in line with other sub-groups).
Please bring along a couple of black and white prints for discussion. It doesn’t matter what the subject matter is, what the format is or what state of development they’re at; they don’t need to be mounted and they don’t need to be finished work. For example they could be test prints of work in progress or they could be disastrous prints with a green or purple haze! Basically, anything goes. We can discuss any printing problems you may be experiencing and look at what makes a successful monochrome print. If you have a finished digital print that you are particularly pleased with, please also bring along a copy of the original colour image and a brief explanation of the process and equipment you used to get the result you have achieved. Of course, your work doesn’t need to be digital, traditional darkroom work is more than welcome as well.
It is not intended to set up the projector on the first night but we will be looking at monochrome PDI work as well as printed work in future meetings. If you wish to bring along a laptop or iPad/tablet to show your work on any night, please feel free to do so.
The main aim of the group will simply be to promote and encourage the creation of black and white images. This will include sharing techniques with other members of the group, helping with printing problems and methods. Looking at what subject matter is more suited to making a successful black and white image, use of lighting and filters. Use of various software, including plug-ins such as Nik Silver Effects etc. Depending on the level of interest in traditional film photography, we will perhaps in future aim to set up instruction days and tuition in darkroom techniques and use of film. We will organise days out shooting in monochrome and workshops led by invited guests.
We will also discuss the future aims of the group - what subjects would you like us to focus on at future meetings? Would you rather meet every month as a separate group or every two months as part of the Print Group? Should we deal strictly in black and white or include other forms of monochromatic imaging? Etc etc.
Another aim is to set a small project for completion before the next meeting, nothing serious, just a bit of fun to keep you thinking in monochrome! With the winter holidays and the north Mundham Exhibition coming up, the next meeting will probably be either late January/early February so there will be nearly two months to think about and complete a small project over the gloomy winter months.
